Health insurance for unemployed people

Low- or no-cost health insurance

The coronavirus has impacted all of us.

If you have recently become unemployed, you don’t have to go without health care.

You may be able to get low- or no-cost health insurance through Medicaid.

Medicaid covers things like doctor visits, hospital stays, and prescriptions at little to no cost to you. It works just like any other insurance with health plans and provider networks. You can apply for Medicaid through your state at any time — enrollment is year-round.

If you do not qualify for Medicaid, you still have health insurance options.

If you do not qualify for Medicaid, you still have individual insurance options through the Marketplace. You may even be able to get subsidies (financial help) to help cover the cost. Through the Marketplace, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you have lost health coverage through your job in the last 60 days.

Does Medicaid coverage work the same as insurance from my employer?

Medicaid works just like any other health insurance with health plans and provider networks. Having Medicaid is like having coverage through your employer. To learn more about what Medicaid covers, see Medicaid benefits.
